Originally released digitally to strong critical and listener support, UNREAL finds a natural home on cassette a format that reinforces the warmth, depth, and tactile nature of the project. The K7 edition presents both vocal and instrumental versions, offering listeners a deeper insight into Mezraa’s production language. A carefully curated EP UNREAL brings together a strong cast of collaborators, reflecting both Mezraa’s local roots and his international reach. The EP features standout contributions from MED, long associated with Stones Throw Records and renowned for his work with J Dilla, Madlib, and Blu, as well as Montreal’s own Kris the $pirit, whose sharp penmanship adds weight and perspective throughout the project.
On “Subtle Games,” Mezraa links up with rising Montreal vocalist jjad, crafting a dreamy, contemporary R&B track built on hazy synths, Rhodes chords, and a subtle boom bap swing. The track later took on a new life with the addition of vocals from London-based artist Liv East, who discovered the song organically through a playlist and instantly connected with its atmosphere. Across the EP, Mezraa balances soulful melodies with crisp, head-nodding drums, creating a sound that feels both intimate and expansive rooted in hip hop tradition while open to modern R&B and alternative influences. With support from Apple Music, YouTube Music, and radio outlets, UNREAL has already surpassed 150,000 streams across platforms.
